Phone cards have become quite popular recently as people are realizing that they can save money by using domestic or international phone cards for their long distance calls. Long distance plan rates are often expensive and it is very easy to rack up large phone bills at the end of the month, especially if you call across the country or abroad regularly. Using international phone cards can help keep your spending in check. It's easy with phone cards. You cannot spend more money than what it cost to buy your phone card!

Phone Card Pitfalls

  • Connection Fee

Connection fee or first minute surcharge is charged when a call is connected. The charge varies between different service providers. This charge is not significant if you are buying a small value card and intend to use it at once. But, if you buy a high value card, with high connection fee, then you end up paying this fee everytime you make a new call.
  • Maintenance Fee

The maintenance fee or sweet fee is charged if the calling card has balance, after making the first call. This charge varies between different service providers and their products. This is generally done for keeping the PIN account active after first use. The charging is done on weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, after the first use.
  • Minutes Rounding

Minutes rounding is the basic unit to record the length of the phone call. This varies between service providers and products. High value cards may have 30 second rounding and low value cards may have 3 or 6 minute rounding. This is a very important information, you should know, before using a card and while talking on the phone.

Domestic calls: Dial 1 + area code + telephone number.

International calls (from the USA): Dial 011 + Country Code + City Code + local number.

First marketed as clever novelties, pre-paid phone cards now are sold everywhere. They are used mostly by travelers, people who regularly call overseas, Occasionally, pre-paid phone cards have a hidden cost: because you've paid up-front, you may be out of pocket and out of luck if you discover a problem trying to use the card. That's a big difference between prepaid phone cards and traditional long distance calling cards, where charges don't appear on your bill until after you've made the call.
